CODE OF ETHICS
Ethics are a part of moral philosophy that we consciously or subconsciously practice daily. To maintain my core values in my professional and personal work, I have created a list of six pillars that reflect my principles in my day-to-day life as a managing editor, journalist and citizen.
Truth.
Truth is a pillar I strive for every day. I spare no effort for truth in the stories and each interaction. As a professional, I believe in honesty as starting with myself bleeds over into all my work and the workplace.
Accuracy.
I strive for 100% clarity when fact-checking, quote-checking, and editing for the truth of each story. Being accurate is the foundation of journalism in transparency, and I intend to uphold this pillar as leaving no rock left unturned.
Diversity.
Diversity, I believe, is an opportunity to meet and learn from people with different backgrounds. I believe this pillar helps me currently and in the future when working with individuals with different ideas and insights into their lives.
Objectivity.
Objectivity is a critical foundation in journalism. As a professional, I will gather information and report the stories with facts. I will never report on bias or my opinion regardless of what I am working on.
Respect.
As a professional, every person deserves respect regardless of their background, ideas, or beliefs. I believe any individual has a story and an interesting perspective on life that should be valued.
Freedom.
As a professional, the First Amendment guarantees my right to freedom of the press and speech. I will not take advantage of these rights to manipulate myself, the story, and individual(s). I will uphold these freedoms when reporting as reflecting the SPJ Code of Ethics.
My ethics code is held to a high standard, and I take it very seriously. If you have any questions about my code, please feel free to contact me using the information provided under the "Contact" tab.
